Grade UE06: £34,610 - £39,906 per annum, pro rata

Guaranteed hours role: paid hourly - £18.96 per hour plus 18.1% holiday allowance

CAHSS / School of Literatures, Languages and Cultures

Part-time: estimated number of hours guaranteed - 40 per tutorial

Fixed-term: 1 year (September 2026 to August 2027)

The Opportunity:

The Department of European Languages and Cultures, part of the School of Literatures, Languages and Cultures, invites applications for a Tutor in Italian.

The tutor will be required to contribute to the teaching of Tutorials on Foundation 1 Italian in Semester 1. The tutor is required to have native/near native knowledge of Italian, and experience of teaching Italian language to non-native speakers (L2). The successful candidate must be a fully matriculated PhD student at the University of Edinburgh for the full period of work to be undertaken.

The School of Literatures, Languages and Cultures is looking for Guaranteed Hours Tutors to deliver learning and teaching activities such as undergraduate tutorial sessions or other classroom activities, within an established programme and with specified learning outcomes as part of the integrated overall structure of courses and to enhance the learning experience of students. A key purpose of the role is to create a stimulating and interactive learning environment, where students can further their understanding of course topics and develop their academic skills, including critical thinking, analytical skills, argumentation and communication skills, and independence of learning.
This post is primarily aimed at School of Literatures, Languages and Cultures PhD students entering their second and third year or PhD students registered on a related programme from another school.

Your skills and attributes for success:
  • Fully matriculated PhD student at the University of Edinburgh for the full period of work to be undertaken.
  • Demonstrable ability to apply knowledge, skills and techniques to teaching and ability to understand the needs of a group and individual students and to provide appropriate guidance.
  • Demonstrable a capability to lead groups, which may have been gained through experience as a demonstrator, including explaining concepts in a clear and understandable manner.
  • Sufficient knowledge of the topic under discussion to adequately lead the discussion taking account of the needs of the specific group including detailed explanation of how the topic relates to the wider area of study.
  • Understanding of the basic principles of teaching, learning and assessment.

LLC's Tutor and Demonstrator pool is comprised of colleagues on a variety of contractual arrangements, including colleagues on open-ended contracts with the School and current PhD students with an existing contract. When considering the work available, the School is required to ensure that our employment obligations to these continuing tutors are met first and they will be considered first when offering and allocating hours.

Once work has been provisionally allocated to our continuing tutors, we then consider new applications received from potential tutors. All allocations need to take into account any restrictions on working hours such as visa restrictions and the limit of an average of 9 hours per week across the academic year for full-time postgraduate research students. You must also remain a matriculated student for the duration of the contract, and the contract end date cannot surpass your end date on EUCLID.

About the Team

DELC offers research expertise and teaching in a wide range of languages: French, German, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Norwegian, Danish, Swedish and Catalan, with postgraduate supervision available in all, and degree-level study available in all but the last. With over 40 members of full-time research staff, including an expanding number of post-doctoral fellows and experts in Translation Studies and Film Studies, as well as a variety of Foreign Language and Teaching Assistants, the Division offers a vibrant and stimulating environment for study and research, in the literatures and cultures of all the languages it specialises in.

The Division works closely with the consulates and national cultural centres in the capital and is home to a wide number of international research and publication projects, ranging from the Princess Dashkova Russian Centre to the Centre d'études francophones belges.
