Associate Professor in Italian at the Department of Foreign Languages

We are seeking a motivated and academically strong candidate for a permanent position as Associate Professor in Italian at the Department of Foreign Languages, commencing on 1 August 2027 or as agreed upon.

The Department of Foreign Languages offers nine study programmes: Arabic, English, French, Italian, Japanese, Chinese, Russian, Spanish Language and Latin American Studies, and German. Within these fields, research is conducted on languages, literature, history/society, and didactics. The department has approximately sixty permanent academic staff members, about twenty PhD and postdoctoral positions, and eleven administrative employees.
The programme offers teaching at all levels, from bachelor's to PhD. The study portfolio also includes online continuing education. The academic staff are active researchers with networks extending far beyond the University of Bergen and Norway.

The Department seeks a candidate who fits the research- and teaching profile of the discipline at the Department. Ongoing research and potential to strengthen the department's academic profile in the coming years will be emphasized.
The administrative language is Norwegian, and it is a requirement that the employee can achieve Norwegian at B2 level within three years of appointment. UiB offers Norwegian language courses for employees from abroad.

- Research within the field of Italian language, culture and/or literature, with 46% allocated research time.
- Teaching across a broad range of courses at the bachelor's and master's level, including more specialized and advanced courses, as well as supervision at all levels, including PhD.
- On-campus teaching, online teaching, and hybrid teaching (i.e., combining online and campus-based instruction)
- Participation in the assessment of written and oral examinations.
- Teaching, supervision, and examination duties within your area of expertise at other fields or departments at the Faculty of Humanities as needed.
- Contribute to the development of the discipline and course offerings.
- Contribute to dissemination and development of the research environment.
- Participation in national and international research collaboration.
- Project development and application for external funding.
- Other academic and administrative tasks.
The applicant must have:
- Research competence in Italian language, culture or literature equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree.
- Experience in teaching and supervision in Italian studies at a minimum bachelor's level, as well as the ability to teach at all levels.
- Documented relevant educational competence based on education or teaching and supervision; see Rules for assessment of educational competence at UiB.
It is a particular advantage to have:
- Documented research activity and published research results beyond the doctoral level within Italian language, culture and/or literature, with particular emphasis on the 20th century and contemporary culture, or on Italian cultural expressions in an international context. In the assessment of scientific work, research from the last five years will be given particular weight.
It is an advantage to have:
- Experience with research collaboration and international cooperation.
- Documented ability to initiate research projects and obtain external funding.
- Documented competence in project management, coordination of research activities, and strategic research planning.
- Competence in translation didactics, including experience in translation between a Scandinavian language and Italian.
- Competence in digital didactics, including experience with online teaching and hybrid teaching (i.e. a combination of on-campus and online instruction).
